Traithlon Training ...

Triathlon Training in the North Seattle Metro Area

Yesterday I went to the triathlon training with other's
that are part of Experience Momentum.
Holy cow! We swam a quarter mile straight through- no stops.
Last time I swam a quarter mile I had two resting points...
Did I mention I swam/ kicked 1/2 mile the day before?!
It's pretty safe to say my body is extremely exhausted.
Picture Below:
Rachel and I before we know what we are doing.
I'm the only nut who didn't wear a wet suit.
Was I crazy? Quite possibly... The water was F.R.E.E.Z.I.N.G...

Remember how Rachel is a power house?

After the quarter mile swim.

I'm not quite ready to have full body shots in a bathing suit yet...

So no in the water shots- sorry guys! haha!

After I pulled off the swim cap it tore out and broke off all my little hairs! *pain!

I tried 7 stores yesterday to find a one piece bathing suit.

Can you believe that in 7 stores the only plus size bathing suits I found were

TWO PIECES?

What fat girl is going to wear a two piece? Or should I say what MOM is going to?

I'd like to keep the saggy belly in- thanks. :S

The only one I found in my entire city was at R.E.I. and has NO support.

It's a racing/ triathlon suit so I'm not complaining tooo much- however it wasn't CHEAP!

$86.00 including tax.

My husband was NOT pleased... hopefully it'll fit better next summer?!?

Because it's a racing suit and I'm quite endowed there were some "issues"

while I was swimming.

It was quite embarrasing. I think I need to find a new sports bra-

or I'll HAVE to wear a wet suit.

Picture Below:

Remember- No support in bathing suit= chubby looking mama!

Before the bike ride home.

And I'm off!...

And as of 10:30 this morning...
this is what I still look like!

I'm just a little worn out!

Busy Bee Tuesday!

Another busy busy week has come and gone. Along with excitement and adventures, there has been more goals reached and other disappointments. Although I am pleased to say that none of my disappointments were as catastrophic as my last two week weight-gain shockers. Phew! :)

So let me tell you about my first 13-mile bike ride! I am so stinking proud of myself because let me tell you, this route was a doozey!

Wednesday night (last week) I left for Rachel's house which is about 3.1 miles away. She met me on the road when I was about a 1/2 mile out. Then we attempted to cross a busy road. Almost getting ran over in the process of turning left at an intersection I may have lost my cool- only a little though. I said no naughty words, and I even waited for Rachel to move ahead of me (didn't want to be a bad example- don't you know!) before I let some eagle fly.

Now I'm not proud of my weakened state here. I could have easily just spit bugs at the two blonde bimbo's and felt somewhat satisifed, but I know deep down inside I would have carried that dirty queasy angry little man inside me the entire ride. So yes. I fell victim to the evil little man and showered the bimbo's with a gesture, just a single one, and rode like the wind.

It's funny to look back on how stupid I was. I was on a flimsly crap-shoot of a bike and the bimbo's were in a fast moving vehicle. Just a little jerk of the car would have scared the poop snot out of me enough that I would have probably fallen off my bike. I can hear them now laughing at the fat chick. *shivers! One good thing did come out of my weakened character though! The adrenaline of flashing a dirty sign gave me the "oomph" to make it the rest of the way. (Mostly because I was so embarassed that someone I knew may have seen me and I wanted to bury my head in shame... hmmm?...)

About a mile from our destination my chain fell off and ended up getting grinded in between my gears. For two reason's this had to have been the most unpleasant experience ever. One: Rachel is an amazing power house and was already at our destination and two: I got into a fight with a garden spider. I know... drama drama drama. 20 minutes later, purple faced with exertion I made it to the church. I walked my shaking self into the bathroom and just let loose.

I cried... and cried. Oh and I cried some more. I cried out of self pity because of I was alone when my chain got stuck. I cried because the garden spider was the size of my hand when I noticed it was in my face. And I cried out of pure satisfaction. I had made it! The second hill we climbed on our bikes was graded as extremely hard. I did have to get off my bike, but I was still so proud of myself for making the journey. How many people who are 60 pounds over-weight go out of their way to be in physical pain for just the fun of it?! It was a worthy moment in the book of me.

Now on to swimming!:

Yesterday I was elected (by Rachel) to be Rachel's spotter while she swam across the lake across from where I live. Not going to lie, I had it easier than Rachel since I had a kick board most of the time. I decided that in order for me to be a "good" spotter I needed to be readily available if anything were to happen to her. So I kicked along behind her for half a mile.

If you're thinking to yourself right now if that really was easy, let me assure you it wasn't. I WAS completely out of breath and my legs were on FIRE about a quarter the way there. So I did what any normal sane woman would do. I wedged my kick board in my swim shorts. HAHA! So here I am, laying on top of a kick board doing the breast stroke. It was pretty fun if you ask me! Not only can I say I swam about a half mile yesterday, I can say it knowing I didn't let Rachel drown!
I'm actually really grateful for that silly mult-colored kickboard because I did get a cramp in my side while I was just treading water during Rachel's break. Nothing scary or anything... just enough to make me stop and cringe.

So I know that I can do a quarter mile w/o help, and half a mile with a kickboard. Tonight is swim/ triathlon practice- we'll see how far I can go this time.

Now on to my disappointment this week:

My bike really really sucks. I think that I need to get myself a hybrid (mtn/ road bike). My birthday AND anniversary are coming up... so I've already started begging Josh. Maybe you all should beg right along with me!!

:) And in closing I want all of you to remember! No matter what trial you may have in your life, or what your own self-image may be... You are beautiful. You are special and you can do anything you put your heart to.

Back-Tracking Weigh-in's...19 & 20

So this is a back-tracking weigh-in because I've gained some weight back. I'm not proud of this, and actually am very frustrated; however know that I'm going to jump back on the train and am going to do this thing.

I feel as if I've plateaued to be honest. I've been riding my bike hardcore (for me) and even achieved some new goals. But the weight isn't changing. I'm sticking to my eating plan ... for the most part. Josh and I had my family reuion and then went on a date. I don't see those things throwing me so completely off but maybe I scarfed down more than I realized.

I've recently weened my daughter from nursing and am now not losing those extra 500(?) calories. I'm sure I also need to up my workouts because it's been awhile since I've changed up my routine.

Still. Does all that really affect weight loss so much? I hate this. I hate how hard this is. I hate how I feel like I should be me again BUT still have 60+ lbs. to go.

Rrrrarrr! This picture truly depicts how I'm feeling right now. (Not sure who the actual photographer is... but I LOVE this shot... I found it on someone elses blog.)

Well. I haven't had my measurements taken in awhile... not even sure when I'll have them taken again but I do have my actual weight. Maybe I'll have Josh measure me for next week so I know where to "start" from again.

To the numbers:
I had gotten to 241 pounds from 269. (28 lbs. lost).

I'm now 244. 3 pounds gained since my last weigh-in several weeks ago. UGH.

At least in the entire 5 months? this is my first time gaining weight back. I mean... that is a plus, right?

If anyone has any healthy yummy recipes for whole wheat foods please share!

Did So Good ...Until the End.

Any normal over-eating sympathizer would have been proud of me while I was away on my journey. I even had some family helping me find healthy choices while we had our large family meals together. (Thanks Aunt Susie!!) I was definitly pleased with my eating decisions ... until our drive home.

Many of you may have already heard some of my driving traumatic experience, however not all the details or how I dealt with it.

Allow me to enlighten you ...

We left for home Sunday shortly before noon. The drive was for the most part uneventful- until something in my dad's Jeep blew as he pulled into a gas station in La Grande, Oregon. 4 hours later Josh, the kids and I left for our "midway" stop for the night. My parents followed in their new rig.

Not too bad for 13 hours on the road right?

Well Monday was a little more exciting. Had I had on a pair of depends I may have a completely different story to tell altogether. Thankfully this is not the case. :)

Josh was feeling sleepy so he pulled over about 10 minutes into our 4 hour drive. I took the wheel and searched our IPOD for some "classy" tunes for me to belt out along with. It's a little humbling for me to admit I was singing at the top of my lungs with Backstreet Boys, Disney, Enya, Seether, Ashley Simpson, Avril, Britney Spears ... and much much more. Like many other people who go back to their music of choice from their high school years, I too enjoy my old embarrassing melodies. However, I digress. This story is about the driving, not the singing!

Rocking out with the entire family snoozing I felt comfortable. This is a big deal because I hate driving. Hate isn't even quite the word for it... it's more like loathe from the bottom of my very being.

About an hour and a half we reached Manastash (between Yakima and Ellensburg) and our easy driving experience began to turn quite scary. Manastash isn't quite a mountain pass because it's actually located between hills; however don't let this fool you. This small "pass" can be quite treatorous especially when there are a large amount of semi-trucks with heavy loads.

Going up the second steep hill our smaller car was having trouble keeping up with the 70 mph speed limit, so I kept it at an even 60. Most of the other drivers on the road were semi-trucks who were going much much slower so I didn't have to worry about people running me over. (Foreshadowing*)

Instead, what I should have been worrying about is what came to pass. Apparently there was a truck struggling to get up the hills and was put-putting up at about 15 mph. Another semi was stuck behind him and probably needed to pass so that he could make it up the hill as well; however he did not check his mirror. My anger at this driver isn't that he slowed me down. My anger is that he pulled out in front of me going 15-30 mph while I was going 60 mph. My anger is that he did this when I was beginning to pass him. My anger is that had someone not been looking out for us on the other side my entire family would have been lodged underneath this trucks trailer.

Seeing this happen in front of me my mind began racing with adrenaline. I screamed and woke my husband up who quite possibly suffered a small heart attack. He yelled.

The car began fish tailing as I slammed on the breaks. The trailer getting closer and closer to us. And then I look in the rear view mirror.

Apparently some guy got bored traveling in his huge RV because there he was chatting away on his cell phone (which is illegal in Washington) coming up on me fairly quickly. (I'm just going to assume he was trying to keep his speed up so he could get up this hill as well.) So here I am, slammed on my breaks to keep from killing us when there is another big vehicle getting ready to squish my family like a can of sardines.

I had a full on panic attack. BAD TIMING. I know.

I began pumping my brakes. If I was going to wreck us I wasn't going to go down easily. Just in time the RV driver realized his folly and jerked his RV to the right and passed us immediately.

Now here's the scary part...

Remember why the semi-truck cut me off in the first place? Yup. There was another semi going about 15 mph ... and he's still there. So here's me starting to get control my car, and now an RV losing control so he doesn't kill himself by slamming into the slow moving semi on the right.

Obviously we came out of that very scary, very horrible situation okay ... but the story isn't done. Oh no. Not yet.

So I'm still in the middle of a panic attack; sobbing and wailing trying to keep the car going up the hill instead of off the cliff. Guess what Josh whips out?!

Several chocolate bars. (My mom had originally intended them for my children. Hmm. I guess that didn't turn out very well for them! HAHA!)

He began "feeding" me chocolate piece after chocolate piece. And whaddya' know!?! I began to calm down. MMMM.... sinful evil chocolate. How I love thee...

I manuever the car into the right lane and we go on our merry way. Or so I had prayed.

To my left comes a large open bed one-tone pickup truck carrying various items. Still hiccuping from my now controlled panic attack I watch this truck warrily. And wouldn't you know it. My dramatic experience turns horrific as a spear-like pole launches out of the bed of the truck and heads STRAIGHT for our windshield.

WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO FREAKING DO????

Even Josh screamed (well more like a manly hollar). Just as my car and this pole were nearing contact it curved down and hit the pavement and I drove over it.

I just drove over a spear that should have killed us.

We should have died.

Twice.

MORE CHOCOLATE PLEASE!!!!

I pulled into a gas station 10 minutes later in Ellensburg and got out. I then walked into said gas station and bought 2 candy bars, 2 bear claw donuts, and a big bag of beef jerky.

Need I mention all food was GONE before we hit Snoqualmie pass??? (30 minutes away.)

I know, I know... I admit that it's pathetic I once again turned to chocolate in my time of need but I have to tell you- I had to make an educated decision. Either kill us because of being tightly-wound... or work extra hard for the next couple of weeks because of a couple extra pounds? I chose the pounds.

To close off of our extra-exciting trip home we also ended up stuck on the pass for an hour due to an accident. Once traffic began moving again we saw a dead body covered by a tarp off of the road.

My prayers that night were the most fervent, heartfelt prayers I have said in a long, long time.

Thank you Lord for protecting me and my family.

(I'm sad I came home with the number higher on the scale, but am thankful I have the chance to correct this so that when my time does come- it's because I'm old and withered.)

*I'll post my Week 19-weigh in tomorrow.

Pre-vacation Snacking

This last week was pretty intense. Exactly a week ago we started on our adventure to the Hansen Family Reunion. In my optimism I thought the trip would take us 10 hours to get there- and 10 hours home. Boy was I wrong! It took us about 15 hours to get there and close to 20 hours on our journey home.

Was it worth it you're thinking?

Oh totally! I would do it all over again too. It was great fun catching up and laughing with family. The hardest part however is where the relevence to this particular blog comes in. THE GOOD-E-LISCIOUS FOOD!

Oh snap!

So Tuesday night before we left I slaved away until 1 am. trying to figure out some healthy snacks for the drive to Idaho. I came up with whole wheat oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

Are you thinking "YUM!" right now?

Well you're DEAD WRONG ...

What a disappointment! I was so excited to get them out of the stove when the buzzer went off and there sat 12 BALLS of cookies. What? Apparently these cookies don't flatten out when you cook them.

Second batch. Lets see what happens now. I decided to "pre-flatten" the dough by squishing it before placing it on the cookie sheet.

Did it work?
Well the cookies were now at least cookies- but they still tasted the same. Dry and crumbly.

And the worst part???

What they did to my intestines afterward. I DO NOT recommend these cookies for any type of traveling trip what-so-ever. LOL!

I also have to add for all of you who are following! While I was away my blog reached it's 2000th view! Thank you for all of your support and interest in my blog. I know I can achieve my goals because I have family and friends who care.

Love to all and remember: You are beautiful!

10% Body Weight Goal (week 18 weigh-in)

Last week I made a huge milestone in my journey. I lost 10% of my entire body weight. I started out at 269 pounds and last week reached my 27 pounds lost! When I weighed in on Saturday I was so excited to see that I had lost ANOTHER pound, putting me at 241 pounds! (28 pounds lost!)

Losing 10% of your body weight has very REAL positive consequences. They include:

*Lowering blood pressure and reducing chloresterol- which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease! The fuel that keeps me burning on this journey is the fear of getting heart disease. Knowing I've reduced my chances already warms my heart. (Pun totally included! :P)

*Lowering risk of developing Type II Diabetes. (Losing 10% helps your pancreas better produce insulin and your body to break down the food to regulate your blood sugar levels.)

*Helps increase energy levels.

*Helps breathing which also helps prevent angina- chest pain caused by the decrease of oxygen to the heart.

*And helps promote mental health- a little confidence boost always helps me feel a little happier!
So I'm excited to show you (and maybe they aren't HUGE Earth shattering results but I'm still excited none-the-less!) my 10% results visually!

Enjoy! And don't mind the messy hall way! My children LOVE playing in the hampers. HAHA!
***Note*** I will be leaving Wednesday August 4th for my family reunion! I won't have another official weigh-in for two weeks and won't be posting Friday Loves either. I will continue to post my weight when I return next Monday. I hope your all enjoying your summers as well!
